SCHOOL BALDER | BODICE & SKIRT

Final Project for Apparel Design by Flat Pattern | Fall 2020

The objective of this final was to manipulate a standard bodice and skirt pattern to include designs of sustainable architecture. I chose School Balder located in Brussels, Belgium that integrates a school and the neighborhood with plenty of outdoor space for all to use.

The focal point of my bodice design is the radiating pleats that move up from the middle of the bust towards to the top shoulders. As seen in the School Balder building, there are lines in the overhanging roof where I have also incorporated interfaced sleeves that represents the roof and add stiffness to resemble power and professionalism. The sharp lines & edges make for a bold statement on the bodice, just as it does with the School Balder building.

PATTERN MAKING

The first half of this class we learned to draft up multiple patterns that included different variations of bodice's, collars, sleeves, and skirts. From the originals, we manipulated the patterns to use for our own designs and adjusted for fitment.

ADDING PLEATS

For the bodice, I decided to go with pleats because I wanted to keep the lines simple and clean, but also keep the bodice fitted for a professional look.

JUTTING CAP SLEEVE

After I had completed the fitment of the bodice I moved on to manipulating a Jutting Cap Sleeve pattern where I reinforced the sleeves with interfacing to add stiffness to depict power. As a teacher, professor, or instructor, the knowledge you provide to your students is also a form of power.

SKIRT CONSTRUCTION

Moving on to the skirt I wanted to incorporate the classic statement of a pencil skirt. Keeping the design simple and professional, I added two pleats to the front and two to the back and a 7" slit to allow for movement.

COMPLETED AND FITTED (FRONT)

This was one of my toughest projects I've had to execute with the minimal amount of sewing practice combined with this being my first pattern making course.

COMPLETED AND FITTED (BACK)

The fabric I chose was cotton for the ease of constructing and cost effective. The colors I decided on were Scarlett for the bodice because that is the main color for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Frost Grey as that is the head coach of the Huskers football team. GO BIG RED!
